Matka is an Indian name for rough handloom silk fabric constructed from extremely thick yarns spun from pierced cocoons (Mulberry silkworms ) in the weft and organzine in the warp. Many processes are involvedĀ here and yarns are spun by hand without removing the gum (sericin). As a result, there are slubs and imperfections that give the fabric its distinct character.
